The Origins of May Day (International Workers’ Day)

May Day, celebrated on May 1st, traces its roots to the labor movement in the United States—specifically the fight for the 8-hour workday in the late 19th century.

In 1886, hundreds of thousands of workers across the country went on strike demanding fair working hours. The movement reached a turning point during the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where a peaceful rally turned tragic after violence broke out between protestors and police.

While the event itself was controversial, it became a global symbol of workers’ rights, unity, and sacrifice. Soon after, May 1st was recognized around the world as a day to honor labor movements and the ongoing fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity on the job.

Why May Day Still Matters Today

May Day isn’t just history—it’s a living reminder of the value of organized labor, especially today.

It represents:

  • Fair Wages & Benefits → Union workers continue to lead the way in securing strong contracts, healthcare, and retirement security
  • Safe Working Conditions → Protections many workers rely on today were fought for through collective action
  • Opportunity & Access → Apprenticeships and union careers create pathways to the middle class without student debt
  • Community Strength → Union labor builds the infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and communities we all rely on
