When Unions Unite, Working Families Win

The strength of organized labor has always been rooted in solidarity. Today, that solidarity is evolving beyond individual organizations and becoming a united movement focused on expanding opportunities, protecting workers, and building a stronger future for working families across North America.

The Union Labor Advisory Network (ULA Network) proudly recognizes the historic partnership between the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT)—a milestone that demonstrates what is possible when labor organizations come together with a shared vision.

In July 2026, LIUNA and IUPAT signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), committing both organizations to work collaboratively on organizing, workforce development, legislative advocacy, and collective bargaining. Representing more than 700,000 skilled trades professionals, this partnership sends a powerful message that the future of organized labor is stronger when unions work together.

A New Era of Union Collaboration

The agreement establishes a framework for both organizations to coordinate their efforts in ways that benefit not only their members but the entire labor movement.

Together, LIUNA and IUPAT have committed to:

  • Coordinating organizing campaigns across North America
  • Aligning legislative and public policy priorities
  • Supporting stronger collective bargaining efforts
  • Expanding apprenticeship and workforce development opportunities
  • Promoting family-sustaining wages and quality healthcare
  • Protecting retirement security and workplace safety
  • Defending workers' rights through a unified voice

With leadership from LIUNA General President Brent Booker and IUPAT General President Jimmy Williams Jr., this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that the next generation of skilled trades professionals has greater access to careers that provide dignity, stability, and opportunity.

Why This Matters for Union Members

For current union members, partnerships like this create real value.

A coordinated labor movement strengthens bargaining power, allowing unions to negotiate stronger contracts, better wages, improved benefits, safer working conditions, and increased job opportunities.

By sharing organizing strategies and expanding market opportunities together, unions can grow membership while protecting the work that union members have fought generations to build.

Most importantly, collaboration creates a stronger voice when advocating for workers at the local, state, provincial, and national levels.

Why This Matters for Future Workers

The benefits extend far beyond current members.

For students exploring career options, military veterans transitioning into civilian employment, career changers, and individuals looking for a stable future, stronger collaboration between unions means more opportunities than ever before.

Expanded apprenticeship programs, coordinated recruitment efforts, and greater investment in workforce development make it easier for individuals to discover meaningful careers in the skilled trades.

These careers offer:

  • Earn while you learn apprenticeship programs
  • Industry-leading wages and benefits
  • Retirement and pension security
  • Healthcare coverage for families
  • Ongoing education and certifications
  • Long-term career advancement
  • The opportunity to build the infrastructure that strengthens our communities

The Future of Organized Labor is Partnership

The challenges facing today's workforce are larger than any one organization.

Growing infrastructure investments, clean energy projects, advanced manufacturing, transportation modernization, and community development all require a highly trained workforce.

Meeting those demands requires collaboration.

Across North America, labor organizations are increasingly recognizing that success is achieved by sharing resources, supporting one another, and working together to strengthen the entire labor movement.

The LIUNA-IUPAT partnership serves as a model for what that future can look like.

ULA Network's Commitment

At the Union Labor Advisory Network, our mission has always been simple:

Support. Educate. Promote.

We believe collaboration is one of the greatest strengths of organized labor.

Through educational media, workforce development initiatives, apprenticeship awareness campaigns, veteran transition programs, and strategic partnerships with unions, contractors, employers, benefit funds, educators, and community organizations, ULA Network works every day to help strengthen the labor movement and inspire the next generation of skilled trades professionals.

When unions collaborate, communities benefit.

When apprentices succeed, industries grow.

When veterans find meaningful careers, families become stronger.

When organized labor works together, everyone wins.

Building Tomorrow—Together

The historic collaboration between LIUNA and IUPAT is more than an agreement between two organizations.

It is a reminder that organized labor has always been strongest when it stands together.

As the labor movement continues to evolve, partnerships like these will help create new career pathways, strengthen local economies, improve working conditions, and inspire future generations to discover the value of union careers.

At ULA Network, we proudly celebrate every effort that advances education, opportunity, workforce development, and the shared mission of building stronger communities through union labor.

Because the future isn't built by one organization alone.

It's built together.
