Interview with Demos P. Demopoulos, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 553 New York

🎙️ Demos P. Demopoulos, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 553 and Joint Council 16, has built his life around service to the labor movement. His journey started young—at just 11 years old, he was helping his father on an oil truck during a blizzard. A few years later, he began working in the oil industry himself, officially becoming a Teamster in 1978.

With over 40 year as a Teamster, Demos has held nearly every position in the union, from shop steward to executive board member, before taking on leadership at both Local 553 and Joint Council 16. He’s proud to represent over 2,500 members at his local and more than 110,000 members across Joint Council 16.

For Demos, union work isn’t just a career—it’s a calling. “I was making good money and had great benefits, better than most of my friends who graduated college,” he recalls. “I never thought I’d end up working for the union full time, but I love it. I’m dedicated to the union and proud that we’re able to improve the lives of not just our members, but their families as well.”

Under his leadership, Local 553 and Joint Council 16 continue to fight for fair wages, stronger benefits, and dignity on the job, all while bringing locals together in solidarity to build a stronger future for working people.
